Lately I’ve noticed something in the conversations we have with clients. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a manufacturer, a professional services firm or a not-for-profit, in Auckland or Christchurch. The same three questions keep coming up.
They’re good questions. Every business owner should be putting them to their IT provider. Here they are, along with the honest answers.
1. “Can you help us be more productive?”
Yes, and the answer usually isn’t another piece of software. Most of the gains are hiding in the Microsoft 365 subscription you’re already paying for, and in the AI that now comes with it. The majority of businesses only use a small slice of what they’ve bought. What’s missing is rarely technology. It’s getting people to use it, setting it up well and having a plan.
What good looks like: your IT partner asks what you’re trying to achieve before talking about tools, then fits the technology to those goals. If yours opens with a product pitch instead of questions, take note.
2. “How do I know we’re secure and reliable?”
Honestly? You only know if someone can show you. “I think we’re OK” won’t satisfy your board, a big client’s security questionnaire or your cyber insurer at renewal time. And now there’s the added job of securing the AI tools your staff have already started using.
What good looks like: proof, not hope. Several layers of protection, monitoring that catches problems early, and regular reports you can pass straight on to whoever’s asking, measured against a recognised standard that can be independently checked. That’s the whole idea behind our KARE cyber security.
If you aren’t getting that evidence every month, you already know the answer.
3. “Am I getting value for my IT spend?”
IT spending shouldn’t feel like feeding coins into a machine and hoping. The businesses that do this well see IT as something that gives them an edge, not just an overhead. The trick is visibility: knowing what each dollar is for, what it’s delivering and where the next one is best spent.
What good looks like: your IT budget is tied to your business plan. Our Flightplan strategic reviews do exactly that, so spending is planned rather than reactive.
What sits behind all three
Put the three together and the message is clear. Business owners aren’t asking for more technology. They want proof, clarity and someone who understands their business first and talks about products second.
Try these questions on your current provider. If the answers are clear and backed up with evidence, brilliant, hang on to them! If it’s all “don’t worry, it’s fine”, maybe it’s time to talk to someone else.
We’re happy to answer all three for your business, no strings attached.
