A practical AI journey for NZ businesses
AI doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need a clear path.
The businesses doing best with AI don’t try to do everything at once. They work through it step by step, building capability as they go. AI isn’t one decision, it’s three stages, each one laying the groundwork for the next. You can’t really skip ahead.
Stage 1: Experiment
Start small and build confidence. Every AI journey starts here. It’s about getting hands-on and getting comfortable. That usually means:
- learning what AI tools can actually do
- running workshops and practical sessions
- finding internal champions
- trying it on real work
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s familiarity and momentum, so people are comfortable using AI in their everyday work.
Stage 2: Governance and confidence
Make AI safe as it grows. Once people are using AI, the next challenge is control. Without guardrails, the risks climb quickly. This stage is about:
- finding out where AI is already being used (including “Shadow AI”)
- putting policies and decision-making frameworks in place
- protecting sensitive data, and securing the agents and apps people are “vibe-coding” themselves
- giving leadership clear reporting
Stage 3: Operationalise
Turn AI into real business value. This is where AI stops being an experiment and starts changing how the business runs. At this stage you:
- build AI into your core processes
- create custom agents and automations
- connect AI to your existing systems, like your CRM or ERP
- track the results and measure the return
Now AI isn’t just interesting, it’s doing real work alongside your people.
Why it works
- Experimenting builds understanding. What is AI? Does it add value? Where can we use it?
- Governance lets you scale safely. Once you know how AI can help, you also learn where it can go wrong.
- Operationalising delivers measurable value. Automating specific processes to cut cost and improve service.
Skip a step and things tend to fall over. Follow the journey and AI becomes a genuine advantage.
Where are you?
Most NZ businesses are somewhere in stage one or two, and that’s completely normal. The opportunity isn’t to rush ahead, it’s to move forward in a structured way. Do that and you’ll avoid unnecessary risk, get results faster, build confidence across your team and make AI practical, not just theoretical.
Knowing where to start is still the most common thing holding businesses back. That’s why Kinetics Group, through Kambium, has built a structured AI framework to help businesses go from curious to capable with confidence. You can read more about it here.
